Simply Quilling is easy!

This page highlights the five simple steps of Quilling.

First we'll look at the various basic shapes that are so easy to make:

Now making these shapes involves five (5) simple steps for example:

A Tight Coil:

1 - Place the quilling tool in your right hand and the quilling paper strip in your left hand between your index finger and thumb. (If you are left handed, the reverse applies).

2 - Feed 3 - 4mm of the paper strip into the slot of the quilling tool.

3 - Turn the quilling tool, pulling the paper between your fingers (this controls the tension). Then turn the tool until a tight coil and end is reached.

4 - Hold your finger behind the tight coil (to prevent it unwinding) and glue the free end.

5 - When the glue is dry, gently push the tight coil off the tool from the underneath. Never pull the middle, as the coil could pull out and unwind.

A Loose Coil:

1 - Place the quilling tool in your right hand and the quilling paper strip in your left hand between your index finger and thumb. (If you are left handed, the reverse applies).

2 - Feed 3 - 4mm of the paper strip into the slot of the quilling tool.

3 - Turn the quilling tool, pulling the paper between your fingers (this controls the tension). Then turn the tool until a tight coil and end is reached.

4 - Release the tight coil and let it unwind.

5 - Drop off the quilling tool and let it finish unwinding, then glue the free end. Your loose coil is now ready to be shaped to your needs.

An 'S' Scroll:

1 - Place the quilling tool in your right hand and the quilling paper strip in your left hand between your index finger and thumb. (If you are left handed, the reverse applies).

2 - Feed 3 - 4mm of the paper strip into the slot of the quilling tool.

3 - Coil to the centre of the strip, let the coil unwind and drop off the tool. Coil from the other end in an opposite direction. This creates an 'S'.

4 - Lengthen the 'S' scroll by gently pulling the coils apart.

5 - Place a small spot of glue where the coil touches the strip, to hold it in place.
